According to a report from MEN, Manchester United are making progress in their attempt to sign Pau Torres who is currently on the books of Villarreal.

The 24-year-old’s current contract with the La Liga side will expire in 2024 and he has a release clause of £51 million.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are currently in the market for finding a partner for Harry Maguire, with the Spanish footballer said to be under consideration now.

The Red Devils recently made a £50 million bid for signing Rafael Varane from Real Madrid but Los Blancos turned down their offer as they wanted around £80m for letting their player leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

Pau Torres, who is currently engaged with the Spanish national side for Euro 2020, is said to be a more attainable target for United.

The 24-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2020-21 season. He racked up 33 La Liga appearances last campaign, scoring two goals and creating two assists in the process.

Pau Torres also played an important role in their Europa League final victory over United, with the center-back converting his penalty to help his side win the shootout at PGE Arena Gdańsk.

The talented defender is an academy product of Villarreal and has so far made 87 senior appearances for the Yellow Submarine, with five goals and four assists to his name (stats from Transfermarkt).
