The Premier League is the best league in the world where some of the greatest footballers have displayed their skills. It was founded on 20 February 1992 and has gone on to secure enormous popularity around the world within a short time.

In 1994, the league began awarding the Premier League Player of the Month – an award that recognizes the best-adjudged player each month. Plenty of famous footballers have gone on to win this award. Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, and Thierry Henry are some of the biggest stars of modern football who have won this prize.

However, you will not find their names on this list as we have included only those who have won the most Premier League Player of the Month awards.

6. Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the most famous football player. He played in some of the biggest leagues and achieved enormous success in the world. He is currently on the books of Juventus and still firing lots of goals even at the age of 36.

Career

Ronaldo started his senior career with Sporting Lisbon but soon left for Manchester United in 2003. His reputation prodigiously increased in England as he contributed heavily to the successes of the Red Devils. He helped the Manchester side win three Premier League titles as well as the European Cup.

Real Madrid parted with £80 million in 2009 to secure the services of the Portuguese footballer. His football magic also continued in Spain as he won 15 trophies at the Bernabeu, including four Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles.

Ronaldo won four Premier League Player of the Month during his time in Manchester, which is a remarkable feat considering he made only 196 league appearances. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner got his first award in November 2006 while his last came in March 2008.

5. Wayne Rooney 

Wayne Rooney is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation. He earned a big name for himself in football while playing for Manchester United.

Career

Rooney started his career by joining the Everton youth team in 1996. He was only 16 when he earned his professional debut for the Toffees in 2012. His performances for the Merseyside club landed him a move to Manchester United in 2004.

And at Old Trafford, the English footballer greatly enhanced his reputation and achieved enormous success. He won every major trophy during his time in Manchester. While his 253 goals for the Red Devils made him the club’s top goal-scorer of all time.

Given his supreme talent and exceptional performances, it was no surprise that Rooney topped the Premier League Player of the Month nominees five times. The forward won his first POTM award in February 2005 while his last came in January 2010. He won the award twice in the 2005 season.

The talented forward also has the distinction of winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year as well as the FWA Footballer of the Year. He was also named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI for 2011.

4. Robin van Persie 

Robin van Persie is widely considered one of the best strikers of his generation and was a nightmare for defenders and needed only a tiny space to score.

Career

The Dutch footballer started his youth career at Excelsior before joining Feyenoord in 1999. He made his professional debut for the Eredivisie side in 2001.

The immensely talented striker remained for five years with Feyenoord before he joined Arsenal in 2004. Partnering with Thierry Henry in the attack, Van Persie displayed his immense talent and impressed the Gunners’ fans with his performances. During his time in Highbury, he scored 96 goals in the English top-flight and also won the 2004-05 FA Cup. He finished 2011-12 as the top goal-scorer in the Premier League with 30 goals.

Manchester United splashed an initial £22.5 million in the summer of 2012 to procure the signature of Van Persie. He looked immensely promising for United as he finished his first season as the league’s top scorer with 26 goals.

However, he couldn’t live up to his potential at Old Trafford due to injuries although he found himself on the scoresheet on 48 occasions in the English top-flight.

Robin van Persie is tied with former teammate Wayne Rooney with both winning five Premier League Player of the Month awards. He claimed his first award in November 2005 during his second season with Arsenal. Over the next eight years, he earned four more Premier League Player of the Month votes, with his last coming in April 2013.

3. Steven Gerrard 

In the footballing world, Steven Gerrard needs no introduction. He remained associated with football for a long time, spending most of his career with Liverpool.

Career

Gerrard was only nine years old when he joined the Liverpool academy. He rose through its ranks to earn his first-team debut in a Premier League match in November 1998. His stature in the team grew over the years and he was made captain in 2003.

One of his most memorable moments for the Merseysiders came in the 2005 Champions League final. The midfielder gave a standout performance as the Reds came from 3-0 down to defeat Milan in the important match. He was also a star performer in the following year’s FA Cup final against West Ham.

Playing primarily as a central midfielder, he was known for his leadership, determination, and influence on the game. He won several prestigious trophies during his 17 seasons at Anfield, with only the Premier League title eluding him. He scored 120 goals in 504 top-flight appearances for Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard won the Premier League Player of the Month an incredible six times. He picked up his first award in March 2001 before bagging two more in 2003 and 2004 respectively. The Liverpool legend’s next three awards came in April 2006, March 2009, and March 2014.

2. Harry Kane 

Harry Kane is enormously famous in English football; known for his goal-scoring prowess and ability to link play.

Career

Kane started his career at Tottenham Hotspur by joining its youth academy in 2004. Then he rose through its ranks and was promoted to the senior team in 2009.

Initially, he remained on loan to several different clubs, including Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City, and Leicester City. However, his fortunes greatly changed after the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino in 2014. He repaid the faith of his new head coach as he struck 31 goals across all competitions in his first full season.

He has been a consistent performer for Spurs over the years, regularly providing plenty of goals and assists. One of his best campaigns for the London side came in the 2017-18 season when he scored an incredible 41 goals in all competitions.

During his time at the club, the amazing striker got on the scoresheet on 160 occasions in 234 top-flight appearances. Such an immense talent hasn’t won any big trophies reflects not his performances but the collective failure of Tottenham Hotspur as a club.

Harry Kane, who is one of the most lethal strikers in the English top flight, has the distinction of topping the Premier League Player of the Month nominees for an incredible six times. He got his first two awards in January and February 2015 before picking up one more in March 2016. He was most successful in the year 2017 when he won three POTM awards in February, September, and December.

Sergio Aguero started his career at the Argentine side Independiente. He earned his debut at 15, thus becoming the youngest player to play in the Argentine Primera Division.

The Argentine contributed heavily to the success of the City over the years. During his time in Manchester, he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups, and an FA Cup. He struck an incredible 257 goals in 384 total appearances.

Manchester City star Sergio Aguero has won the Premier League Player of the Month vote an unbelievable seven times. This makes him the only player in history who has won the POTM award on seven different occasions.

His latest Player of the Month came in January 2020. He struck six goals in three appearances in January to deserve the prize. The Argentina international has thus overtaken Steven Gerrard and Harry Kane in the process. He won his first award in October 2013 before claiming one more in November 2014. The former Atletico Madrid player received two awards in 2016 and went on to win one each in 2018 and 2019.
