There was a lot of anticipation among fans before the Premier League’s blockbuster clash between Manchester City and Arsenal on Sunday.
However, the Etihad Stadium encounter didn’t live up to its billing as the two sides played out a disappointing goalless draw to share the spoils of the game.
The stalemate handed Liverpool the advantage in the title race as the Reds claimed a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion to go two points clear at the top of the league standings.
Arsenal played a cautious game looking to contain the threat of Man City’s attack.
The Gunners were successful in their strategy as they limited Pep Guardiola’s side to just a single shot on target.
But that also meant they also had limited chances of their own at the Etihad Stadium.
Nathan Ake came close to scoring early in the game but his effort was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Gabriel Jesus also posed an occasional threat and was very close to connecting with Bukayo Saka’s cross after the half-time.
In the end, a draw felt like an apt result given both sides provided a poor performance.
Mikel Arteta will probably be the happier manager with the outcome as Arsenal have had a poor record at City’s home ground.
Pep Guardiola’s side will now return to Premier League action again on Wednesday as they welcome Aston Villa in Manchester.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will be up against Luton Town on the same day at the Emirates Stadium.
